The park in numbers

  • The Jandía Natural Park lies in the municipality of Pájara, in the southern part of the island, and covers 14,318 hectares.
  • It has 57 km of coastline: cliffs, sandy beaches and coastal platforms.
  • The Jandía massif is home to the island's highest mountain, Pico de la Zarza, at 807 m, and many endemic species of flora and fauna.

Getting there

By car. Access is a dirt track across the massif. Guides mention 45 to 60 minutes of driving from Morro Jable and about 20 km of track, although figures vary by source. In dry conditions some guides say an ordinary car can get through slowly, while others recommend an SUV or 4x4; after rain, a high-clearance vehicle is advisable.

Rental car: read the contract. Many companies exclude damage on unpaved tracks and the insurance may not cover towing or roadside assistance. If in doubt, the bus or a guided trip avoids the problem.

By bus. Tiadhe includes line 111, Morro Jable – Cofete – Punta de Jandía, in its network. According to the posted timetable, seats cannot be reserved and there are only a few departures a day: check the official timetable before planning your return.

Guided trips. Several operators run small-group or jeep tours of western Fuerteventura; some include Cofete, the El Pesebre lighthouse and Playa de Ojos. Compare what each one includes before booking.

At the end of the track

Cofete beach is a long open beach of more than ten kilometres beneath the slopes of the massif. Line 111 continues to Puerto de la Cruz and the Jandía lighthouse at the tip of the peninsula.

Park rules and advice

The Jandía Natural Park information leaflet asks visitors to:

  • Not leave any rubbish.
  • Bring sun protection and water.
  • Respect the signs of the protected natural area.
